Explore card meaningHow to understand tarot card meanings
A useful interpretation begins with the card itself: the scene, the people, the objects and the movement or stillness in the image. Then consider the question and the position where the card appeared. A card associated with change can invite a different reflection in the past position than it does in a question about what to focus on today.
The guides in this library use the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition, with its familiar illustrated scenes and archetypes. Other decks may use different images or associations. You can draw on a traditional meaning while also noticing how the card’s details relate to your own situation.
Major Arcana and Minor Arcana
The Major Arcana follows a symbolic journey from The Fool to The World. These cards can bring attention to broad lessons, transitions and ways of seeing life. The Minor Arcana looks more closely at everyday experiences through four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Each suit includes ten numbered cards and four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen and King.
A court card does not have to represent a person of a particular age or gender. It can describe a quality, approach or role available to anyone. Read it in the context of the question rather than assuming it identifies a specific person.
Upright and reversed meanings
Upright meanings describe a card’s themes as they are expressed more openly. A reversed card can suggest that the same energy is blocked, internalized, exaggerated or ready to be reconsidered. Reversed does not automatically mean bad. Our guides explain both orientations so you can consider a fuller range of possibilities.
Apply the meaning to your own question
For love and relationships, notice themes of communication, care, trust and boundaries. For career and finances, explore your habits, practical choices and relationship with resources. For spiritual growth, consider what the card invites you to learn or release. Tarot offers an interpretive perspective; real-world decisions still deserve real-world information.
Questions about the 78 tarot cards
How many cards are in a standard tarot deck?
A standard tarot deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana is divided into Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles, with 14 cards in each suit.
Do tarot cards have different meanings for love and finances?
Yes. The central theme of a card can be explored differently depending on the question. The same card might prompt reflection on mutual support in a relationship and cooperation in a work setting. Each guide includes these different life areas.
What does a reversed tarot card mean?
A reversed card is a card that appears upside down in a spread. Readers may interpret it as an inward, blocked, imbalanced or changing expression of the card’s themes. Some readers do not use reversals at all.
Where should a beginner start?
Begin with one card and read its symbolism, main meaning and reflection questions. You can then try a past–present–future reading to explore how three cards connect.
